After finishing university, I was eager to launch my career in Germany. With experience from the Digital Product School and as a working student at E.ON, I felt ready for the next step. However, entering the German job market turned out to be much tougher than I had anticipated. My work experience from abroad was often overlooked, and the language barrier felt daunting – it was as if I was starting from scratch.

Everything changed when I joined amiga’s Job Buddy Program in June 2024. My Job Buddy Karin who has been working for a Swedish company for many years truly understood the unique challenges faced by newcomers in Germany. She helped me set clear goals, refine my application documents, and improve my interview skills. Her guidance was invaluable, especially as I navigated the pressure of looming visa deadlines and the complexities of adapting to a new culture.

After many applications, I finally secured a few interviews. With Karin’s support, I learned to present myself more confidently and address my language skills proactively. In September 2024, I started as a Product Owner at an international start-up. The environment was fast-paced and exciting, but also demanding – with high expectations and the added stress of visa issues.

My Key Learnings

  • German language skills are essential – especially in roles involving communication with customers and stakeholders. I found it challenging to practice and improve my German (B1 level), as colleagues would often switch to English as soon as they noticed I wasn’t a native speaker.
  • Universities could do more to prepare international graduates and students for the realities of the German job market. As Karin often pointed out, there is a clear mismatch between academic preparation and what employers expect.
  • Cultural adaptation takes time and support. Building a new life in Germany wasn’t easy, but with the right guidance, it became manageable and rewarding.

Although I will soon move to Australia to join my partner, my time in Germany has given me resilience, confidence, and valuable experience as an expat.

My advice: The journey isn’t easy, but with the right support, you can turn uncertainty into opportunity. I’m deeply grateful to amiga – Career Center for Internationals and to Karin for helping me lay a strong foundation for my career.
